Habitat Innovation & Management develops wildlife habitat products for Australian native species. The brief for this nest box range was to design modular boxes suitable for owls, cockatoos, and other cavity-nesting birds — with a strong emphasis on ease of installation and maintenance without specialist tools.
The modular system allows a base unit to be configured for different species by swapping entrance aperture panels, adjusting internal depth, and selecting appropriate mounting hardware. This approach reduced tooling investment while giving wildlife managers flexibility to adapt installations to specific species requirements.
The precision latch mechanism was the most technically demanding element of the project. The latch needed to hold securely against wind loads and animal interference while releasing cleanly by hand for nest inspection. Achieving the right balance of retention force and release ease required multiple iterations through live tooling modifications — an unusual level of refinement for a rotomoulded product.
